Our 2009-2010 season continues twenty-eight years of tradition yet also presents some exciting changes. We offer the music of the great composers of the Baroque era-Bach, Schütz, Buxtehude, and Telemann-and also of lesser-known masters like Zelenka, Boxberg, and Seixas. You can hear works in the nineteenth-century Bach tradition by Brahms and Reger as well as French Baroque chamber music by Rameau and Couperin. Bach's Passion settings have become an annual tradition for our listeners, and this year, the St. John Passion returns to the series. The brilliant Magnificat by Dresden court composer Jan Zelenka will be a delightful new treat. We continue our commitment to historically informed performance practice. Our successful artistic alliance with the period-instrument musicians of Mercury Baroque has encouraged us to reshape the Bach Choir into a more authentic configuration of sixteen core singers. This new vocal ensemble's flexibility and transparency of sound paired with the historical intruments of the Bach Orchestra will be unique in Houston. The Bach Choir and Orchestra will be joined by some of Houston's finest soloists and by acclaimed British countertenor Ryland Angel. An international roster of organists and the Portuguese chamber music ensemble Tinta Barroca are among the further highlights of the season. The Bach Society continues to offer its programs to the entire community without admission charge. This is only possible with the generous support of private donors and foundations in addition to free-will offerings received at our events. Please consider making a contribution using our online contribution feature. All contributions to the Bach Society, a 501(c)(3) organization, are tax-deductible.
